This project was made in collaboration with Copenhagen Health Innovation (CHI), The National Center for Art and Mental Health and Amager Phychiatric Ward. The curatorial team associated with the National Center for Mental Health was working towards the opening of the platform 'Ømme Knapper' or 'Tender Buttons', an exhibition and gathering place for contemporary art and 'care activism' that speaks from a place of vulnerability. It would present a series of exhibitions consisting of exhibitions by contemporary artists who work on themes of vulnerability, illness and care in different ways. Along the way, the exhibitions would facilitate performances, workshops, reading and discussion groups, panel discussions and symposia with a focus on cross-sections and junctions between mental illness, art and politics.
The aim of the project work was to develop design solutions for 'caring wayfinding' through a psychiatric hospital, specifically for the National Center for Art and Mental Health premises on the 2nd floor, and the 'Tender Buttons' exhibition rooms whos location were yet to be decided at the time. The hospital itself is very much like a labyrinth. Even the task of getting up to certain floors required you to use a certain elevator, which is located on one end of the hospital. Special design-measures were therefore in need to create a wayfinding, that would not only reflect the feeling and brand of NCAMH and 'Ømme Knapper', but also were careful and curated to the building's users at large.
This project was done in groups. The process and final solution should therefore be also be credited to my group-members: Emilie, Hannah & Tor.
As part of this project, we were tasked to document the process as well as the final result, in order to make a film. This is that film:
We have called our solution for "Find, Flex, Form" from the three main tasks for the project: Giving FORM to a FLEXible wayFINDing for the National Center for Art and Mental Health at Amager Psychiatric ward.
Starting of making a moodboard to visually define care, empathy, safety and vulnerability. The feelings and space that our wayminding should ultimately aid to create.
We looked into textures, shapes, colours and also excisting wayfinding. Key insights were to work with round-ish, natural shapes and materials.

Below are some different wayfinding-options that we then looked into and sketched onto the given location: the lobby.

Making of the map of the overall premise of Amager Psychiatric ward:

Making the dicision to use The National Center for Art and Mental Healths own logo to give their identity to their wayfinding, we took much care to see which coluor-schemes fitted with sacred murals. That is, which colours that would catch the visitors attention, but not disturb the other artworks.

To then implement those elements to the actual signage as well as the supporting broshure.
